The Good Pirate is a project by Avant-Gardening/Bijou Stories predominantly for older LGBTQ+ members (though all ages are welcome!). Participants will collaborate with creative professionals to create a variety show which they will be performing in December at Greenwich Theatre. The show, a re-imagining of a traditional variety show/cabaret, will reinterpret the pirate as an escapee from a homophobic, patriarchal society, traveling on the Good Pirate to meet characters and visit lands which represent snapshots of queer history. The show, written and performed by the local LGBTQ+ community will be told through storytelling, adapted sea shanties, video inserts, song, dance, and performance. Tickets for the show are available on a pay-what-you-can basis starting at just £3 per ticket and are available from Outsavvy https://www.outsavvy.com/event/31003/the-good-pirate-redux
Get onboard and join the crew! There is still time to join the crew for the December show at Greenwich Theatre. We are holding an introductory workshop at Greenwich Theatre on Monday 3rd November 6pm – 7.30pm. Free tickets are available from https://www.outsavvy.com/event/31330/the-good-pirate-greenhorn-session

Join the Good Pirate Shanty Choir
As part of the show at Greenwich Theatre we will be showcasing sea shanties in the bar area before the show and featuring a shanty in the show itself. We are looking for enthusiastic folks to join the choir and be a part of this unique show. We will be running workshops at National Maritime Museum and Greenwich Theatre. You don’t need to be a great singer just up for joining in with gusto. The next Shanty Session will be held at The Maritime Museum on 13th November 11am – 1pm
There will be other opportunities to join workshops before the performance. These informal workshops will be on: 3rd November at Greenwich Theatre (time to be confirmed) and 13th and 27th November at Maritime Museum 11am – 1pm. You are welcome to join as many or as few of the workshops as you like and there will be an opportunity to take part in a final rehearsal on 1st December.
The aim of this project is not only to produce a community curated variety show but also to create a supportive space where participants can build friendships and find peer support. We believe that this organic approach to creative activity helps support both mental and physical wellbeing and to this end we are working with an external evaluator to assess the impact of the project on the participants’ wellbeing. We will also be highlighting the often unheard voices of this generation of LGBTQ+ people and using them to advocate for better mental health support and to tackle the existing health inequalities experienced by the group.
For The Good Pirate we are partnering with Royal Museums Greenwich and Greenwich Theatre as a way of building engagement with local cultural venues.
