Songs of the sea – shanty workshop

Get on board to raise the roof with a selection of rousing sea shanties as part of The Good Pirate project. This is a workshop for members of the LGBGQ+ community and their allies to make some noise in the sea faring village of Deptford. No experience needed – just come in hearty voice to raise the roof.

The Albany, Saturday 16 August 1.30pm – 3.00pm

This workshop ties in with our project, The Good Pirate, a community created variety show offering alternative and fantastical stories of piracy from a queer perspective. The group is predominantly drawn from the over 55+ LGBTQ+ community, but we are opening these workshops to all ages and LGBTQ+ allies so that we can gather a rousing group who will enjoy singing together.

The first workshop will be taking place at The Albany in Deptford on Saturday 16th August 1.30pm – 3.00pm. No experience necessary as this is a friendly and informal group. There is no commitment needed and people are invited to come along to as many sessions as they would like.

Future workshops will be announced in the near future with sessions taking place at The Maritime Museum, Greenwich and other local venues. The sessions are free to join but we do ask people to book in advance so we have an idea of numbers. Please book your tickets here: Songs of the Sea – Sea Shanty Workshop Tickets | 16 Aug @ The Albany, London | FREE | OutSavvy

Those that really enjoy a hearty singsong will also get the opportunity to perform at public events like our Good Pirate shows at The Cutty Sark and Greenwich Theatre. There will also be the opportunity to help adapt some of the songs so that they help to drive the narrative of the performances – a sort of shipshape Greek chorus telling the tale of our piratical adventurers.

Bijou Stories’ Good Pirate is an ongoing project, and we are always keen to welcome participants to our workshops or to take part in our activities.
