An evening of poetry and spoken word celebrating older members of the queer community. Participants in Bijou Stories’ workshops will be sharing spoken word and maybe even a sea shanty for this special evening. We are joined for the event by special guest, Simon Maddrell, who will be reading his works a finger in derek jarman’s mouth and Patient L1.
Simon Maddrell’s poems have appeared in numerous publications including Acumen, AMBIT, Butcher’s Dog, Propel, The Gay & Lesbian Review, The Moth, The Rialto, Under the Radar. In 2020, Queerfella jointly-won The Rialto Open Pamphlet Competition.
Isle of Sin (Polari Press, 2023) The Whole Island (Valley Press, 2023) a finger in derek jarman’s mouth (Polari Press, 2024) were all Poetry Book Society Pamphlet Selections.
Patient L1 is published by Polari Press in February 2025.

Alongside Simon’s readings we will be sharing works written by participants in poetry workshops which capture the authentic voice and stories of older LGBTQ+ people who have often been marginalised and still have to fight to get their voices and stories heard.

Share your story with us!
As is the case with all of our projects we are always looking for ways to involve new participants. In this case we will be hosting two poetry workshops where you will be able to write, share, or simply listen as we write poetry and discuss how we will host the evening. Interested? Then email Paul stories@avanygardening.info
The event is taking place at Deptford Lounge on Thursday 27 Feb at 6.30pm – 8.30pm
