The year is 1966 and Selena is about to transform her semi in Woolwich into a clandestine gay bar where she serves Babycham, consults her crystal ball and greets visitors from the future who share their stories of the LGBTQ+ community through the prism of pop culture. As she greets her visitors they share songs and stories that paint a picture of the victories and challenges that lay ahead.
You can read more about the show in this article on SE Londoner website Songbook at the Albany
Songbook is a project that brings together members of the LGBTQ+ community to share their stories and find ways to bring them to a wider audience through a variety show. Participants took part in workshops with artists and performers to help them think of ways of sharing their stories and to try their hand at different genres from song, stand-up comedy, drag, theatre-making and dance. They also took part in prop-making workshops with designers and professional prop makers to get more experience in theatre production.
Stories from the participants will be integrated into the show through live performances and recorded video and they will be supported by performances by Alotta Nerve, Abi Collins and Umami Monae.
Songbook took place on 14th September, 2024
